The name of this krama “Jaya” refers to Jayavarman VII, great king of the Khmer empire who reigned from 1181 to 1218. Jayavarman had several temples erected in the area we know today as Angkor, such as Ta Prohm and Bayon temples.

Jayavarman VII is famous for restoring the empire after invasions and launching vast construction projects. He built countless temples, hospitals, roads and even a new capital, Angkor Thom, which today is one of Cambodia’s most visited archaeological sites.

Angkor Thom: This city is famous for its monumental entrance gate and the Bayon temple in the center, known for its gigantic towers adorned with mysterious faces.
Jayavarman VII is also known for his devotion to Mahayana Buddhism, although Hinduism and other forms of Buddhism were also practiced in his empire.
